Fitness App Development and Gym Software
Our fitness app development team builds training, booking and coaching apps for Canadian gyms, studios, personal trainers and wellness brands. Fitness apps are won on retention, so we design for the second month, not just a strong first workout.

Who this is for
Fitness app development serves gyms and studios that want bookings and memberships in their own app instead of a generic platform, personal trainers and coaching businesses scaling beyond one-to-one sessions, wellness brands launching subscription content, and connected fitness startups reading data from wearables. Searches for gym software or fitness software usually mean one of two things: a booking and membership tool, or a training product. We build both as custom apps.
Gym software in Canada: custom app or off-the-shelf?
If you run one location and only need class booking, memberships and payments, an off-the-shelf gym software subscription is usually the right call, and we will tell you so in the first call. Custom gym software makes sense when the tool becomes part of what members pay for: your own branded app on their phone, training plans and check-ins from your coaches, a membership model the packaged tools cannot express, or data that has to flow into systems you already run. A custom gym membership app also means you own the member relationship and the data instead of renting it. The table further down this page sets out that decision need by need, and our guide to gym membership app development covers the features, cost drivers and timeline in detail.
Apps we build for fitness
- Workout and training plan apps with logging and progression
- Gym and studio apps for class schedules, booking and waitlists
- Coaching apps that connect clients with a trainer for plans and check-ins
- Nutrition and habit tracking apps with reminders and goals
- Connected apps that read and write data from watches and wearables
- On-demand video workout libraries with subscription access
Key features
- Apple Health and Health Connect integration for steps, heart rate and workouts
- Wearable sync so sessions recorded on a watch appear in the app
- Subscription billing through in-app purchase, with trials and plan changes
- Streaks, milestones and progress charts that give people a reason to return
- Downloadable workouts and video that play without a connection at the gym
- Coach dashboards for assigning plans, reviewing logs and messaging clients
Systems we typically integrate with
- Apple Health and Health Connect for activity and workout data
- Wearables through vendor APIs such as Garmin, Fitbit and others where the vendor allows
- Gym management and access control systems for memberships and door entry
- In-app purchase and subscription management on both stores
- Video hosting for on-demand libraries
- Calendar and payment providers for class and session bookings
Integration access is confirmed during discovery, before we quote, because vendor onboarding often takes longer than the code. Our backend and API service covers the server side of these connections.
What discovery covers for a fitness project
The first week or so answers these questions, and the answers set the fixed-scope quote:
- Whether the business runs on memberships, classes, coaching or content, and which one the app must grow
- Which gym management or booking system is already in use
- Which wearables and health platforms matter to your members
- How subscriptions will be sold: in-app purchase, web or both, and the fee implications
- What must work without signal in the gym
- Which retention signals you will measure after launch
Build custom or use an off-the-shelf tool?
Custom is not always the right answer. This is how we advise fitness clients in the first call:
| Need | Off-the-shelf is usually enough when | Custom makes sense when |
|---|---|---|
| Class booking and memberships for one gym | Gym management platforms with white-label apps are usually enough | Custom when you want your own brand, features the platform lacks, or several locations with different rules |
| Coaching business with client plans | Coaching platforms exist with generic experiences | Custom when the method, content and community are the product |
| Subscription workout library | Video platforms can host content behind a paywall | Custom when progression, tracking and wearable data make the content worth paying for |
| Connected device app | Not available off the shelf | Custom, with Bluetooth or vendor cloud integration |
Compliance and considerations
Fitness data is health data, and both platforms treat it that way. Apple and Google restrict what you may do with information from Apple Health and Health Connect, including a firm ban on using it for advertising or selling it, and they require a privacy policy that spells out what you collect. Canadian privacy law under PIPEDA applies to the same information. We also keep the copy accurate: an app that gives training or nutrition guidance should not make medical claims or present itself as a diagnostic tool, because that changes both the review outcome and your risk.
What drives the cost of a fitness app
Most apps we build land between $5,000 and $25,000, with complex platforms from about $25,000. These drivers decide where yours sits, far more than the screen count does. See our price sheet.
| Cost driver | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Wearable and health integrations | Each platform has its own permissions, data model and review rules. |
| Subscription mechanics | Trials, upgrades, restores and web-to-app entitlements need careful implementation on both stores. |
| Video | Hosting, streaming, offline download and rights management for on-demand libraries. |
| Coach and admin tools | Assigning plans, reviewing logs and messaging clients is a second app in scope. |
| Retention features | Streaks, milestones, social features and notifications need design, analytics and tuning. |
Timelines
- Focused first version. 6 to 10 weeks for an iOS and Android booking and membership app on an existing gym system, or a focused training app.
- Full platform. 3 to 6 months for a coaching or subscription platform with wearables and video.
What moves these ranges:
- Wearable vendor API approvals
- Content production for video libraries
- How quickly decisions and feedback come back each week
- Scope changes mid-build, which we quote before starting
Common mistakes we help you avoid
- Making week one impressive and month two empty
- Using health data for marketing, which both stores prohibit
- Selling subscriptions on the web and forgetting how in-app purchase rules apply
- Ignoring poor signal inside gyms
- Launching without the analytics needed to see who is dropping off
What a first version can look like
Illustrative example: a chain of boutique studios wants to leave a generic booking platform. Version one includes class schedules and booking with waitlists, memberships and passes, check-in, push reminders and Apple Health workout logging. Video classes and a coach messaging feature are planned for phase two once membership migration is complete.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Yes. We read and write Apple Health data on iOS and Health Connect on Android, and connect to vendor APIs such as Fitbit or Garmin where the data you need is not available through the platform health stores.
Yes, and for digital content it usually has to go through in-app purchase, which means Apple and Google take a share. Physical services such as a gym membership or in-person training can often be billed outside the store. We confirm which applies to your model during discovery.
A workout logging and booking app sits at the lower end, while coaching platforms with video, subscriptions and wearable integrations sit higher.
An MVP with plans, logging and progress usually launches in 4 to 8 weeks on one platform, or 6 to 10 weeks on iOS and Android. A full platform with coaching, video and subscriptions takes 3 to 6 months.
With structure rather than gimmicks: a short onboarding that sets a goal, reminders timed to the user's schedule, visible progress, and content that changes as the person improves. We instrument retention from day one so decisions after launch are based on data.
Custom. If a gym management platform already does what you need, we will say so. Studios come to us when they want their own brand and features on top of, or instead of, that platform.
It depends mostly on wearable integrations, subscriptions, video and coach tools. Most apps in this sector cost $8,000 to $25,000 with us, and builds with heavy integrations run $25,000 to $50,000+. You get a fixed-scope quote once those are decided.
